SURE (SUSTAINABLE RESOURCES Verification Scheme)
The SURE system ensures the requirements for the sustainable production of electricity, heat and cooling from biomass are met in line with RED II.General requirements of SURE:
- Requirements on the sustainability of biomass cultivation and production (agricultural, forestry) or the generation of waste and residues
- Requirements on greenhouse gas emission savings and the calculation method
- Requirements on traceability and mass balance for continuous proof of the biomass’s origin throughout the production and supply chain
- Requirements on sustainable cultivation and production for agricultural biomass
- Requirements on sustainable cultivation and production for forest biomass
- Requirements on the documentation
Requirements on sustainable cultivation and production for agricultural biomass. The requirements are incorporated into the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) – (EU) 2018/2001.:
- Protecting land with high biodiversity value
- Protecting soils with high carbon stocks
- Protecting peatlands
- Environmentally responsible management
- The legality of biomass extraction, transport and trade/distribution and upholding international conventions
- Protection for designated protected areas, including wetlands and peatlands.
- Biodiversity conservation and promotion
- Environmentally responsible forest management
- Ensuring forest renewal and maintaining or optimizing the forest’s long-term productive capacity.
- A guarantee that the source area is carbon neutral
